Nestled at the foothills of the Western Ghats near Wayanad, the ↄc House is a 270 sqm single-storey residence in Thamarassery, Kerala. Commissioned by Binil Thomas, a management professional seeking a tranquil retreat on his ancestral land, the design emphasizes harmony with the natural surroundings. The site, rich with vegetation planted by the client’s father, inspired a design that preserves existing trees and integrates seamlessly with the environment. The architectural form features two asymmetric ‘c’ shapes that mirror each other, framing a central tree at the entrance. An open courtyard serves as the heart of the home, surrounded by eight-foot-wide verandahs on three sides, facilitating a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. Transparency is maximized in semi-private areas through large, floor-to-ceiling glass windows with wooden frames, while the bedrooms maintain moderate transparency for privacy. The material palette includes locally sourced rubble masonry, dark textured concrete, grey floor tiles, and exposed cement-plastered ceilings, all contributing to a minimalist aesthetic. Interior elements are thoughtfully designed, featuring custom furniture such as a thin metal bench inspired by the building’s elevation and a wooden dining table that contrasts with the floor and ceiling textures. Artistic touches include an engraved wall painting and a cross-shaped light integrated into a window frame opposite the main entrance. The bedrooms are simple, with minor detailing in furniture, aligning with the overall minimalist approach. Overall, the ↄc House exemplifies a design philosophy that respects and integrates with its natural context, offering a serene living environment that reflects the client’s personal history and the site’s inherent beauty. The House of Noufal, designed by 3dor Concepts in Pazhayangadi, Kannur, Kerala, is a 2600 sq ft residence for avid traveler Noufal Charan and his family. Reflecting the client’s desire for a unique and surprising home, the design blends modern architecture with traditional Kerala elements to create a climatically responsive tropical dwelling.A distinctive sloping roof, nearly touching the ground, provides protection from heavy rains and harsh sunlight, while giving the house a unique form. The structure is organized on three levels following the roof’s slope, enhancing visual continuity. A central courtyard divides the living spaces into public and private zones, facilitating cross-ventilation and natural lighting.The courtyard, featuring natural boulders, floating stairs, and lush greenery, serves as the home’s focal point. Materials such as locally sourced tiles, steel frames, wooden louvered doors, and concrete flooring with inlay work were used. The home features a striking RCC roof slab supported by exposed I-beams, complemented by full-height wooden louvered doors that enhance cross-ventilation and shade. Strategically oriented to capture panoramic views, the two-story layout includes a double-height living and dining area, four bedrooms, and a kitchen. A cantilevered balcony doubles as a shaded porch, while laterite walls and concrete finishes blend the structure into its surroundings. Minimalist interiors feature custom furniture, including a floating dining table and a sculptural staircase, embodying a harmonious blend of form and function. The facade features exposed steel beams forming an “X” and “O” motif, reflecting the client’s steel industry background. Inside, an open-plan layout with floor-to-ceiling windows invites natural light and integrates the lush surroundings. Materials like fly ash bricks and deck-sheet roofing ensure thermal comfort and eco-friendliness. North-facing seamless glass walls invite abundant sunlight, while double south-facing walls mitigate heat gain. A metal staircase resting on a slanted wall adds structural character, and a cantilevered balcony offers a 270° view of the river and surrounding forest. The spatial layout promotes cross-ventilation and connects various levels, with bedrooms and dining areas zoned for privacy and river views.
